Commonwealth games is an international multi-sport event among the athletes from the Commonwealth of nations. This event of games was started in 1930. Since then, it’s been successfully organised in every four year except in 1942 and 1946 as it was cancelled due to World War-II.

At first the Commonwealth Games was initially known as the British Empire games from 1930 to 1950. After that, it changed its name to the British empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954 to 1966 and further it was known as the British Commonwealth games from 1970 to 1974.

The Commonwealth games was the first fully inclusive international multi-sport event in which athletes with a disability are included as full members of their national teams.

Commonwealth games include sports such as Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Beach Volleyball, Boxing, Cricket, Cycling, Diving, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Lawn Bowls, Netball, Rowling, Rugby Sevens, Squash, Swimming, Shooting, Synchronised Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Triathlon, Weightlifting, Wrestling.

Only 9 Countries have hosted the Commonwealth games. A total of 72 commonwealth nations participate in the Commonwealth games. Out of which only six nations have participated in every commonwealth games and they are- Australia, Canada, England, New Zealand, Scotland and Wales.

India has participated in the commonwealth games since 1934 which was the second edition of Commonwealth games.

India won a total of 564 medals in which 203 were gold, 190 were silver and 171 were bronze medals and has attained fourth rank among all the 72 Commonwealth nations. The most successful event for India in these games is Shooting.

Our Country India also hosted the Commonwealth games once in 2010. The Year 2010, was India’s most successful Commonwealth games to date with Indian athletes winning 38 gold, 27 silver and 36 bronze medals.

Now let’s talk about the 2022 Commonwealth games

The 2022 Commonwealth games (2022 CWG) ended on 8 August 2022 at Birmingham, England in which India participated along with 71 other commonwealth nations. 

2022 CWG was the largest CWG ever held with the sale of 1.2 million tickets. It was also the first major international multi-sports event to be an integrated event which means that para games were also held at the same time.

The 2022 Commonwealth games was especially great for womens as it was the first games to host more women’s gold medals than men’s.

India’s Performance at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 

This year was India’s 18th appearance in the Commonwealth games in which the Indian team of 106 men and 104 women were competing in 16 sports. 

India didn’t participate in the sports such as 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball, netball and rugby sevens.

Our para-athletes were competing in athletics, para powerlifting, swimming and table tennis. 

Our opening ceremony flag bearers were Hockey player Manpreet Singh and Badminton Athlete P.V Sindhu. 

The Indian team’s youngest player was Squash player Anahat Singh who competed at just the age of 14 years and our senior most player was Lawn Bowls player Sunil Bahadur who competed at the age of 45 year.

Medals Won By India In Commonwealth games

India’s first medal this year was a silver Medal won by Sabket Sargar in Weightlifting. 

Saikhom Mirabai Chanu won the first gold medal for our country in the 2022 CWG games.

This year India made a debut in winning its first medal in Lawn Bowls by Womens Fours team and also the Men’s Fours team won the Silver Medal in lawn Bowls.

Sharath Kamal won four medals in the Commonwealth games in which 3 are gold and 1 is Silver. 

Sharath Kamal is the second sportsperson of India who won 4 or more medals in Multi-National Multi-disciplinary Sports Event. The First Indian to win 5 medals in a  Multi-National Multi-disciplinary Sports Event was P.T Usha in 1986 Asian Games.
