Know about the Indian Missiles protecting India

Indian Missiles

Since Independence India has developed many tactical and strategic missile systems. India is one of the seven countries in the world with Inter-Continental Ballistic Missiles (ICBMs) and one of four countries with anti-ballistic missile systems.

India conducted its first nuclear test and initiated Project Devil as an attempt to reverse engineer Soviet surface to air missile SA-2 Guideline and Project Valiant to develop an intercontinental ballistic missile. In the early 80s, India conducted its first successful orbital launch. In 2017, India became a member of Missile Technology Control Regime (MTCR). India produced most of the MTCR defined missile technologies required to be integrated to produce most missile systems. India achieved complete self reliance in missile technology.

Types Of Indian Missiles

It is estimated that India has 160 warheads till 2022 which can be categorized as :-

  • Surface-To-Air Missiles (SAM)
  • Air-to-air missiles (AAM)
  • Surface-to-surface missiles
  • Ballistic Missile Defence (BMD) / Interceptor Missiles
  • Cruise Missiles
  • Submarine Launched Ballistic Missiles
  • Anti-Tank Missiles

Surface to Air Missiles

Akash Missile System

A surface-to-air missile (SAM), or ground-to-air missile (GTAM), is a missile designed to be launched from the ground to destroy aircraft or other missiles. It is one type of anti aircraft defence system in modern armed forces.

Air-to-Air Missiles

Air to air missiles

An air-to-air missile (AAM) is a missile fired from an aircraft for the purpose of destroying another aircraft. They are typically powered by one or more rocket motors, usually solid fueled but sometimes liquid fueled. Ramjet engines, as used on the Meteor, are emerging as propulsion that will enable future medium-range missiles to maintain higher average speed across their engagement envelope.

Surface To Surface Missiles

Prithvi 2

A surface-to-surface missile (SSM) or ground-to-ground missile (GGM) is a missile designed to be launched from the ground or the sea and strike targets on land or at sea. They can be fired from hand-held or vehicle mounted devices, from fixed installations, or from a ship.

Ballistic Missiles

Indian Ballistic-missile

Ballistic Missiles are the rocket-propelled self-guided strategic-weapons system that follows a ballistic trajectory to deliver a payload from its launch site to a predetermined target. They can carry conventional high explosives as well as chemical, biological, or nuclear munitions.

List of Indian Ballistic Missiles :-

  • Prithvi-I (SS-150)

  • Surya
  • Prahaar
  • Pralay short range ballistic missile
  • Ashwin Ballistic Missile Interceptor

Cruise Missiles

Supersonic missiles

A cruise missile is a guided missile used against terrestrial or naval targets that remains in the atmosphere and flies the major portion of its flight path at approximately constant speed. Cruise missiles are designed to deliver a large warhead over long distances with high precision. Modern cruise missiles are capable of travelling at high subsonic, supersonic, or hypersonic speeds, are self-navigating, and are able to fly on a non-ballistic, extremely low-altitude trajectory. India has the fastest supersonic cruise missile in the world named BrahMos.

Submarine launched Ballistic Missiles

A submarine-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) is a ballistic missile capable of being launched from submarines. Modern variants usually deliver multiple independently targetable reentry vehicles (MIRVs), each of which carries a nuclear warhead and allows a single launched missile to strike several targets. Submarine-launched ballistic missiles operate in a different way from submarine-launched cruise missiles.

Anti-Tank Missiles

Anti-Tank-Missile

An anti tank guided missile (ATGM), anti-tank missile, anti-tank guided weapon (ATGW) or anti-armor guided weapon or a guided missile designed to hit and destroy the heavily armoured military vehicles. They range in size from shoulder-launched weapons to a larger tripod mounted weapon.
