Guys, Have you ever heard of the Father of Surgery ? This term is used for a surgeon that invented Cataract Surgery along with Plastic Surgery. This guy conducted plastic surgery 2,800 years ago. Do you know the name of this great surgeon ? The Father of Surgery is an Ancient Indian physician, Maharshi Susruta. Maharshi Sushruta was an Ancient Indian Physician who wrote the Sushruta Samhita. This book is like a treasure for the present day doctors as it is one of the most important surviving ancient treatises on medicine and is considered a foundational text of Ayurveda.

Various aspects of surgery are explained in detail in Sushruta Samhita. Sushruta used 125 types of instruments for surgery. These devices were invented considering the complexity of the surgery. These instruments have special types of knives, needles, tweezers etc. 

Sushruta discovered 300 types of operation procedures with special expertise in cosmetic surgery. Sushruta also used to do eye surgery. The method of cataract operation has been explained in detail in Sushruta Samhita. He also had the knowledge of giving birth through surgery. 

Sushruta had expertise in locating and joining broken bones. They used to give alcohol or special medicines to reduce the pain during surgery. Alcohol used to act as an anesthetic. That’s why Sushruta is also called the father of anesthesia. Apart from this, Sushrut also had special knowledge about diabetes and obesity. Along with being the best surgeon, Sushruta was also the best teacher. 

He explained the principles of surgery to his disciples and made them practice surgery. In the early stages, fruits, vegetables and wax mannequins were used to practice surgery. 

To explain the internal structure of the human body, Sushruta used to explain to his disciples by performing surgery on the dead body. Sushruta acquired amazing skill in surgery and made his knowledge known to other people. 

Along with surgery, he also gave information about other aspects of Ayurveda like body structure, body therapy, pediatrics, gynecology, psychiatry etc.
