NSG (National Security Guard) is one of the Central Armed Police Forces in India. It is an elite counter-terrorist unit in India. They are often referred as Black Cats

History of NSG :-

It was founded on 16 October 1984 under National Security Act 1986. It was established on account of 1984 Operation Blue Star and high collateral damage to Golden Temple. Since its founding it has been used in Punjab in 1986 and Jammu & Kashmir.

 Missions of NSG :-

NSG is intended to use only in exceptional situations as it’s a “Federal Contingency Deployment Force” to face all kinds of terrorism in India.

Here’s the list of some of their missions :-

  1. On 29-30 April 1986, during Operation Black Thunder I, 300 NSG commandos and 700 BSF (Border Security Force) troops were deployed in Golden Temple. Around 300 Sikh militants were captured without any deaths on either side.
  1. On 12 May 1988, During Operation Black Thunder II, 1,000 NSG commandos surrounded Golden Temple. In the three day operation, they cleared the Temple and killed 40 terrorists. Around 200 terrorists surrendered in the mission.
  2. After the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi, NSG was employed along with SIT in search and strike missions between 1 July 1991 – 20 September 1991.
  3.  They were also deployed during Ram Janam Bhoomi and Babri Masjid crisis between 25 November 1992 – 16 December 1992.
  4. During Operation Ashwamedh, they charged into the hijacked Boeing 737 with 141 passengers. Both the hijackers were killed before they could harm any passengers.
  5. During 26/11, NSG launched Operation Black Tornado and Operation Cyclone to save hostages and kill the terrorists. They killed 8 terrorists and rescued over 600 hostages.
