 History of Tungnath

History of Tungnath in Uttarakhand is about 1000 years old. Very famous Shiva temple is situated in Tungnath. Behind which many stories are hidden. According to some historical mythology, it is said that when the war of Mahabharata ended, the Pandavas felt very sad due to this war and the mind of all the Pandavas started to remain restless. Then the Pandavas took shelter of Maharishi Ved Vyas, then Maharishi Vyas ji sent them to the shelter of Lord Shankar to escape the wrath of Brahma murder.

Lord Shankar was angry with the Pandavas, so he got up from the Himalayas and went some distance in the form of a bull, but the Pandavas recognized him and followed him. Then Shivji left his body in five parts which are today known as Panch Kedar. When Shivji left his hands at Tungnath, a huge Shiva temple was built at this place by the Pandavas. This Shiva temple is the highest among the Panch Kedars.

Situated at an altitude of 3680 meters above sea level, this temple was built by the Pandavas. This temple is made of very beautiful architecture and there are many temples around it which is very amazing. During the rainy season, the idol of Lord Shiva is removed from this temple and installed in the Tungnath temple in Chopta, and after the rains are over, the idol of Lord Shiva is again installed in the Tungnath temple with drums and instruments. Tungnath temples are opened in April-May and are closed after Diwali.
